Do you need a visa to travel to Europe in 2024? The short answer is NO.
If you are a US citizen planning a Europe trip in 2024, you do not have to worry about obtaining a visa from the ETIAS for at least another year.
This travel requirement has been postponed multiple times – to 2023, then 2024, and currently to 2025.
The new ETIAS travel requirements will apply to you in 2025 if:
- You are FROM one of these countries:
- And are planning to travel TO any of these countries:
What is it?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (“ETIAS”) travel authorization is an entry requirement that will be linked to your passport. It is meant to improve global security and safety by improving security checks on visa-exempt travellers.
How long is it valid for?
It will be valid for up to 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you’ll need a new one.
How do you apply and how much is it?
You can apply here. Note as the time of this post, the portal is currently not accepting applications.
The application fee is EUR 7 (around $7.50) for each individual. Applicants under 18 or over 70 years old are exempt from this payment. You must apply for each individual and cannot apply as a family or group.
Will I get approved right away?
Most application will be processed within minutes, but some may take days and up to a month if issues. It is recommended to apply well in advance of your trip before booking your flight.
